I see it’s been a month since my last post. I suppose I could start every new post with an apology for not updating more often, but that would get old. Now that we are into the farmers market season, I’ll try to do a short update every week.
Tomorrow is that last Thursday of the month, so we will be baking Cornish saffron buns again. Saffron threads are already steeping in milk, and even though it is in a closed container, the aroma is strong enough to portend a fragrant morning tomorrow. We use the saffron milk to make a lightly sweetened dough with currants and golden raisins mixed in. The buns will be coming out of the oven around 7:30am. Hopefully we will have enough to last into the afternoon, but if you want to be sure to get yours, please call ahead.
A couple weeks ago I took a week off and actually went on vacation. It was a bit difficult to leave the shop, but my employees held everything together and from what I hear did a great job.
Never one to miss an opportunity, I spent one of my vacation mornings doing some continuing education in a wonderful bakery in Cleveland Heights, OH. The bakery is called On The Rise, and is owned by Adam Gidlow — a very talented and dedicated baker. Adam’s bakery has a similar product line and is a similar size to mine, so it was invaluable to share ideas and methodologies with them. If you ever find yourself near Cleveland, please stop in. Their baguettes are the best I’ve tasted. Really!
